Love generates love, joy generates joy and together love and joy have the power to make wonderful things.
Thanks to all the people that works at Temakinho, thanks to their love and joy for their job that managed to attract a great number of clients, and thanks to all the clients that everyday fill all the tables at our 4 restaurants, Temakinho, from October 2014, has finally started to support 2 important charity projects.
During a trip to Rio in August, researching new flavors and colors for our restaurants, we met Barbara Olivi that has been helping children in Rocinha for years through her NGO Il sorriso dei miei bimbi.
Rocinha with a population of over 200.000 people, is the biggest favela (slum) in Brazil and all of South America. Rocinha lacks the basic infrastructures of water, sewage system, lighting on the streets, schools, and healthcare…
Many families still live in worrying poverty circumstances, decay and social abandonment. The pacification program that has been ongoing in Brazil for the past year has reduced drug trafficking but raised police abuse and increased human rights violations.
The population inside the favela is very young and victim of prejudgments and social marginalization, reducing their perspectives for a future better life.
Young people are often victim of social depression.
Meeting Barbara and Rocinha for the first time has been an extremely sweet but also bitter (describing it with flavors) experience.
We didn’t need much thought on it, from that first moment we knew we needed to do something for Brazil, a country of which melodies fulfill our restaurants everyday, the country of our tasty ingredients and of our dearest employees.
After a second meeting with Barbara and her husband Giulione at Temakinho Navigli this October, we’ve planned 2 wonderful and ambitious projects.
Improve Flavia´s creche
When Flavia’s little house of 30 sq meters was described as a kindergarten (creche in Portuguese), we just couldn’t believe it. There were 18 kids from 1 to 10 years old that took turns to sit on a little pink Barbie chair that was brought there from us…
To get to her little creche, we had to go through very narrow little roads and go up 251 steep steps in one of the poorest and most dangerous areas of Rocinha.
Flavia’s creche, that is her house, is composed of 4 rooms: 2 bedrooms, 1 living room, 1 kitchen and 1 bathroom. All the spaces are used by the kids and are very small.
Temakinho will bear all of the monthly costs for the food, hygienic materials and school materials, allowing Flavia to invest in refurbishing her terrace, to cover it in order to create another space just for the children.
The Garagem Culinario
Why not doing something related to cuisine? This project is wonderful because finally at Rocinha there will be a healthy place where young boys and girls (from 14 years onwards) can spend their time learning how to cook, do cooking workshops, have fun and get a taste of good life.
- The participants will have access to kitchen workshops and will be involved in the management of the literary cafe.
- The bar will offer natural products with local and international recipes to improve the variety of choice in food and introduce the participants and other locals to healthy food.
- The garage will host a centre of professional orientation and training with various workshops provided by other partner companies.
- The project will have more than 110 participants yearly: – 10 will be interns at the literary cafe
- 100 participants will take part in the professional orientation and will be attending workshops provided by other partner companies
Help us support our projects, we will show you through continuous photographic reports how the projects will be evolving thanks to your donations. We will also give you all the contacts in case you are interested to go visit Rocinha, so you will be able to see by yourself what joy and love are able to create.
